Cedar is a wonderful material for constructing fences or anything else built for the outdoors. Cedar is a soft wood that is not prone to splintering or cracking. You can use either nails or screws without causing any problem. Cedar naturally air dries without any warping and minimal shrinking. It contains natural oils that make it resistant to insects, rotting, mold and warping. Cedar is very receptive to oil and water based stains if you prefer a color over the natural aging process which turns the wood to a silver gray tone. All of these statements are true for both western red and northern white cedar.
Although we carry both cedars at Leaders Fence we strongly prefer the Northern White Cedar. Our white cedar is  rough sawn so our boards are 1" thick and our 2"x4" backer rails are a true 2"x4" and our posts are a true 4"x4". Strength is important, and the added thickness of our white cedar is more than sufficient to withstand the treacherous weather we get here in Central NY. In our more than 45 years of being in business in Syracuse we can honestly say that our white cedar fences on average have lasted 10 years longer than our red cedar fences.
